The Devil's Own

Chapter 14

You whom I could not save

Listen to me.

Try to understand this simple speech as I would be

ashamed of another.

I swear, there is in me no wizardry of word.

I speak to you with silence like a cloud or a tree.

What strengthened me, for you was lethal.

You mixed up farewell to an epoch with the

beginning of a new one.

Inspiration of hatred with lyrical beauty,

Blind force into accomplished shape.

Here is the valley of shallow Polish rivers. And an

immense bridge

Going into white fog. Here is a broken city,

And the mind throws the screams of gulls on your grave

When I am talking with you.

Czeslaw Milosz " Dedication"

Aya woke up groggy from the lack of sleep. Yesterday, Mr.

Barry/Richard appeared at his doorway and went out of his way to make

himself comfortable in Aya's home. The guy was practically

throwing himself at Aya the rest of the evening. When Richard was

leaving he had tried to kiss Aya goodnight, like he was one of the

man's dates. Thank the gods the guy was gone. Of course after

Richard was gone Aya had spent the rest of the night jumping at

shadows and noises resulting in his present predicament. Tired and

already moody, Aya got up wanting very much to sleep the day away.

[What's stopping me?]

[A shower]

Getting up, Aya walked to the bathroom to take a shower. Twenty

minutes later and a very fogged up bathroom, Aya emerged from the

bathroom. Putting on an oversized green tweed sweater and his blue

pajama pants he walked to make himself a cup of tea and eat some

cereal. Aya ate in relative silence only the quiet sounds of Enya

and rustling of the newspaper he was reading breaking it. After

washing his dishes and making sure the kitchen was in perfect order,

Aya settled to watch the morning news. There was nothing that

interested him causing him to doze off ten minutes after.

Richard paced his room for about the twentieth time that day.

Richard couldn't think so as a result he was having a creative

block. He sighed. Yesterday at dinner he had spent all the time

staring at Aya. Richard was still surprised at the way the redhead

looked. When they met at the Space Needle restaurant, he had been

flirting because he wanted Aya to think him non-threatening.

However, now he wanted Aya. The redhead had just evaded his flirting

or comments with a shrug. Aya wasn't interested, actually he was

angry at the invasion of his privacy. Hopefully Aya had no ideas of

killing him at least not yet, if the redhead wanted to kill him after

the job was done that was another matter. By then his luck should

have kicked in making Aya respond to him. Richard wanted to make the

redhead moan and sigh under him. Wanted Aya to accept everything he

had to give him. Wanted Aya to want him as much as Richard wanted

him. Smiling to himself Richard called his secretary.

" Susie, I am taking the rest of the afternoon off. I have an

important meeting," said Richard into the intercom.

" Of course Mr. Barry. Should I reschedule your appointments?" asked

Susie.

" Please do," said Richard cutting the connection. Picking up his

coat and briefcase Richard left to get something to eat for him and

Aya.

Yohji felt guilty. Now that his sexual high was gone he felt like a

traitor. An amused laugh escaped his lips while he thought about

Aya's reaction to this. Coldness was for sure. The redhead wouldn't

say a thing and turn around saying that he didn't care. Just the

thought of it brought a surge of anger forth. Picking up a flower

vase he threw it into the opposite wall totally shattering it.

" Damn him! Damn him," murmured Yohji feeling wetness on his cheeks.

Funny how he didn't notice he was crying.

" Yohji-kun?" asked Omi at the other side of his bedroom door. " Are

you okay Yohji?"

" I'm fine Omi," said Yohji voice sounding strange to his own

ears. " Go away please."

" Yohji I-I want to talk to you," said Omi quietly as if confessing

his sins. " It's about Aya."

That got Yohji's attention and he opened the door abruptly. He may

have looked dangerous because Omi stared warily regretting ever

mentioning the name to Yohji.

" Talk," said Yohji dangerously.

" Calm down first," said Omi bravely. The young blonde knew he was

risking it but he would not have Yohji angry while he was talking to

him.

Yohji nodded and walked back into his room with Omi at his heels.

Omi closed the door when he entered the room waiting for Yohji to

calm down. In the corner were the shattered remains of a vase but

Omi refrained from commenting. Omi watched as Yohji took a calming

breath before talking.

" Okay, I guess it is something important," said Yohji looking at Omi

for confirmation.

" Yes, kind off. Well ever since Aya…left I…I started trying to

track him down," said Omi walking to look out of Yohji's room

window. Everything looked so calm from up here. " I tracked down

his flight to USA. However, Aya being Aya took about six different

flights to lose us. Good technique because it took me forever. You

can't imagine how many flights arrive in US every day."

Yohji smiled at that comment, which made Omi smile back.

" Anyway his last flight was in the Washington state. After that I

totally lost track of him until about two days ago. While I was on

the computer I was searching some names while someone else was doing

it. You see it was Aya and you know Aya is not that good with

computers. I may have not been there for all the notice he gave me.

Still it seems Aya has become rather good with the computer because

it took me about ten hours to track down his line. You wouldn't

believe it!" said Omi throwing his hands up " Lines from everywhere

London, Germany, Brazil, Colombia, you name it.

" I thought you had to stay online long enough to track him down,"

said Yohji quietly.

" Normally yes but I used a kind of virus. It like a leech sticks to

the connection and allows me to track the person calmly. Still Aya

has a lot of protection in his computer because I could only get an

area not the exact location."

" What do you think happened?" asked Yohji looking hopeful.

" Well either he disconnected the computer from the modem or he has a

defense that killed the virus. The latter is more probable."

" Where is he?' asked Yohji looking at Omi from behind blonde bangs.

He seemed afraid to even ask.

" He is in the Seattle area. In Washington. What should I do?" asked

Omi quietly.

" Have you told this to Ken?" asked Yohji quietly.

"…No. I..I didn't want him jumping to go get Aya," said Omi twisting

his long sweater between his hands.

" Omi I am surprised. You minx," said Yohji smiling but the smile

didn't reach his eyes. Yohji was trying to look relaxed when he was

actually far from it. " Don't tell Ken. We at least know where Aya

is. Don't do anything to make him bolt."

" Okay. Are you okay with this?" said Omi. " I ..I just thought you

would feel better if you knew."

" I do. Thanks," said Yohji giving the most genuine smile. Omi

hadn't seen Yohji smile like that in along time.

" I was just worried about you that's all," said Omi smiling.

" Yeah, memories are always a bitch," said Yohji turning his gaze to

look out of the window.

Okaasan can I go to the movies?

Ran you know you have tests this week.

I know but I was hoping to take Aya to watch that movie she wanted to

see.

You are going to spoil her. Remember that you are leaving to college

next year

I know …

Somebody is knocking go get it.

Okay, okay I am coming.

Who is it? Hello? Okaasan it's so dark out here

Go on Ran its where you belong

No Okaasan!!!

Another bang at the door, it was so loud. The noise started

streaming into Aya's conscious mind making him wake up from the

nightmare he was enveloped in. Aya had no idea why he was so tired

today, he really needed some sleep. Grumbling angrily Aya picked up

a gun and headed for the door yanking it open in his hurry to chase

the offending person away.

" What the fuck…" said Aya before he saw who it was. " Damn it go

away, " said Aya trying to close the door on the guy's face but the

latter's leg was between the door.

" Hello beautiful," said Richard giving Aya a smile that must have

worked many times to get what he wanted from women.

Aya decided he had already reached his limit. He could not stand

Richard anymore. Lifting the gun Aya pointed it between Richard's

eyes.

" I don't know who the hell you think you are but this is my house.

This little excursion of yours may have cost me my privacy. So I am

asking you nicely, Leave me the fuck alone!" said Aya feeling his

temper rise at the smug expression Richard had.

" Now I would think you would be glad to see me since I brought lunch

and all," said Richard moving to get inside. Aya was too tired and

shaken from the recent nightmare he had been experiencing to give too

much of a fight. Lowering the gun Aya released a sigh of defeat and

locked the door after Richard came in. Aya could already hear

Richard walking around the kitchen opening cabinet doors. Lifting

his hand to his forehead Aya could feel the beginnings of a fever.

[Maybe that is the reason I am so tired]

" So what do you want to eat? I brought some Cavatini from the best

Italian store in the city…" said Richard trailing off when he saw

Aya. The redhead looked sick. " Aya are you feeling okay?"

" Hm? Yeah I'm fine," said Aya moving from where he was leaning in

the kitchen doorway. Richard walked toward Aya and put his hand in

Aya's forehead to check his temperature. Aya slapped the offending

hand away.

" Don't touch me," hissed Aya remembering how Yohji had gotten to

him. Showing concern, telling him that everything would be alright,

and ending up getting into his pants. " I don't need your help or

concern. Why are you here?"

" Well I thought we could have some lunch while we talked about that

mission in Vienna," said Richard turning to put the pasta into plates.

" Look…" said Aya rubbing the bridge of his nose with his fingers. "

I think we should talk about this `mission' another time."

Richard arched a brow and his smile faltered. The American was not

used to the kind of indifference Aya was showing. Damn, he didn't

have to work so hard to get a woman's attention.

Clearing his throat Richard resumed his smile saying, " Well I will

leave after we eat lunch not before."

Aya looked at him a few seconds before taking a chair and sitting

down. At his side Richard was thinking about how a person could lose

himself in those eyes. [So much intensity in those eyes no wonder he

is good at his job]

" So are you thinking of taking the mission?" asked Richard while

serving the salad.

" Only if you stop harassing me," said Aya taking a bite of his salad.

Richard smiled a predatory smile then, " You know you like the

attention."

" I'd rather not have it," said Aya not lifting his eyes from his

plate.

" Do you mean you have never…" said Richard trailing off.

" I never said that. I said that it makes people make mistakes,"

said Aya looking at Richard. " You should know."

Richard stopped smiling. The redhead could be cold. Richard hadn't

noticed that with lust taking over his senses every time and all.

" Well forgive me but I don't think you know shit about my life to

comment about it," said Richard voice dangerously low.

Aya looked up to see him shrugging the comment as if it was

irrelevant. It wasn't irrelevant to Richard.

" I meant it Aya," said Richard getting up and pacing the room

angrily. " You have no idea how much I have gone through to get

where I am."

" Neither do you. Do you think I am some kind of whore that sleeps

with her clients and kills people at the same time? Get it through

your head, I am not interested in you. You Americans are so damn pig

headed," hissed Aya through clenched teeth. After saying this Aya

took hold of the end of the table, the whole place was spinning.

" Aya are you okay?' asked Richard placing a hand out to steady the

redhead.

" I am fine just go away," said Aya sitting on the chair to stop the

room from spinning. It didn't help.

" Aya you need help, let me see…" said Richard before he placed a

hand in Aya's forehead. " You are burning up, didn't you notice?"

" I guess not," said Aya giving a wry smile. The redhead simply sat

there trying to get his head in some kind of order. How he wished he

could be alone, how he hoped Richard wouldn't be so damn persistent

and go home. Richard got up and went to the bathroom to look for

some medication. Aya just laid his head against the cool of the

table trying to get cold. It was too damn hot inside here, he felt

as if he were suffocating. Getting up Aya walked out the door into

the chilly afternoon air. He sat down in a bench on his backyard

cooling off. Richard came out with the medicine and a glass of water.

" I think you should take these," said Richard quietly. Aya could

see that he felt guilty. [Let him]

" I am sorry," said Richard quietly looking into the forest. " You

should go get some sleep. I will check on you."

" Please just go," said Aya already tired of Richard's intruding

presence.

" I will leave once you are feeling better, I promise," said Richard

trailing a finger against Aya's cheek. Aya evaded the caress before

getting up and walking into his bedroom to fall asleep. Richard

stayed to take care of Aya. He walked around the house noting how

Aya didn't have anything personal. The house looked like it belonged

in a catalog. Entering Aya's room he noticed that the redhead was

mumbling in his sleep.

" …sorry Yohji…Ai shiteiru…" mumbled Aya before Richard put a cool

cloth to his forehead.

Suddenly Richard was very jealous. He knew a little Japanese enough

to understand Aya's ramblings. He put his face near Aya's so close

he could almost taste the redhead.

" You dream of them…your past lovers," said Richard staring at Aya's

lips. " I want you so much and you won't let me have a taste.

Usually it is easier for me to get under someone's pants."

Aya mumbled something and raised a hand to wave Richard away.

Richard was hypnotized, he wanted to taste Aya very much but now Aya

wouldn't know fantasy from reality. Lowering himself Richard brushed

his lips against Aya's feeling how soft Aya's lips were. Groaning he

deepened the kiss and pushed his tongue past Aya's lips. Aya moaned

and put his hands around Richard's neck. Richard cupped Aya's face

and started kissing fervently feeling Aya starting to respond. Aya

shifted breaking the kiss making Richard get up and watch the

redhead's face. Aya didn't seem to notice anything. Trailing a

finger across Aya's face Richard wanted to take Aya then and there

but something Aya said stopped him. Listening to what Aya was saying

Richard recognized the name " …Yohji…"

Hearing the name made Richard furious. Walking out of the house

Richard left Aya alone needing to get away.

Yohji could hear the moaning sounds coming from Ken's room. [I guess

there at it again] Those two couldn't keep their hands away from

each other. Sometimes Yohji would pleasure himself imagining it was

Aya doing it. Afterwards he would feel the cad for doing it but at

least for those moments he felt contented. However, now he didn't

feel up to it. All day yesterday he had spent thinking about what

Omi had told him. Aya was in the US and had kept on with his life.

At least that is what Yohji wanted so when he saw the redhead, he

could beat him to a pulp. Tomorrow he was going to ask Omi if there

was any way of getting a telephone number or something to talk to

Aya. Of course thinking about it Aya would flip and skip town.

Getting up from where he was resting Yohji picked up his coat and

slipped out of the apartment as quietly as possible. Noting the

forth room Yohji chuckled at the irony. When they had first moved

here the three of them had decided to leave a room open just in case

Aya returned. Well that had been about nine months ago and still Aya

gone. Yohji loved walking when he was thinking of a way to resolve a

problem and the problem right now was Aya. Did Aya even care about

him? Love him? Yohji didn't know. The redhead was very good at

hiding his real emotions. Yohji was now sure that he loved Aya, which

was funny considering that they only slept together once. Once and

Yohji had become addicted. How he wished they had a mission that way

those two inside wouldn't be screwing each other silly and he

wouldn't be thinking about Aya.

Aya was waking up by degrees, a feeling of being cold made him regain

consciousness. Then Aya wondered when he had fallen asleep. That

made him bolt out of bed and succeed in making the world spin around

him.

" Damn," whispered Aya looking for a bottle of aspirin. It had been

a long time since he had gotten sick, at least sick enough to be bed

ridden. He was still sick but at least now he could function.

Trailing a hand through his hair to the back of his neck Aya noticed

the amount of sweat clinging to his body. He needed a shower fast

and with that went ahead to take a shower. While in the shower Aya

was trying to remember most of his fever induced dreams but could

only remember a particular one. The dream that involved Yohji doing

some wonderful things to him. It had almost been a shame to wake

up. Aside from the fact that he had enjoyed the dream it troubled

him more. Dreaming of Yohji was not a good sign since Aya was trying

to forget Yohji not create new fantasies about him. Toweling his

hair Aya raided his closet to get something to wear, khakis with a

white shirt. While brushing his hair Aya noticed that he needed a

haircut if he didn't want his hair to become shoulder length and

start being a bother. Entering the kitchen he noticed a flowerpot

with violets and a note.

" What is he thinking?" mumbled Aya getting close enough to smell the

aroma of the flowers and read the note.

THOUGHT YOU NEEDED A LITTLE LIFT. I WILL SEE YOU LATER. SINCERELY

YOURS RICHARD.

" I don't understand with I always get the stalkers," said Aya while

picking up the pot to put it near the kitchen window.

Richard was very anxious to get off work. Even though he was the

owner of the company that didn't mean he could just skip work

everyday. Two days ago after hearing what Aya was mumbling he had

been furious. Jealous even that Aya didn't pay any attention to

him. The redhead still saw him as a client nothing more. Well maybe

a little more but not as Richard wanted. Richard wanted Aya to be

physically attracted to him. However, that wasn't happening. Aya

was more stubborn than he looked. Maybe he should just make himself

scarce and Aya would miss him. [Yeah right] Aya would be glad to

have him off his back. Happy at not having to deal with an

infatuated person.

" Mr. Barry, Mr. Smith here to see you," said Susie through the

intercom.

" Send him in," said Richard putting on his false smile.

Scott Smith entered the room. This was a man that knew he drew

attention. He was about 6ft. brunette with pale blue eyes. His

posture gave an impression of pure strength of character, someone

that never lost.

" Scott," said Richard signaling the chair in front of him. " How

are you today?"

" Oh spare me the bullshit Richard. We both know you don't mean it,"

said Scott staring at Richard through slitted eyes.

" Are you angry?" asked Richard amused. Scott was very jealous and

the fact that almost as soon as they broke up he was after Aya…

" So you got a new whore?" asked Scott putting on a fake smile.

" Not a whore," said Richard not saying more because he knew what

Scott wanted was information. Try to get rid of the competition.

" Well we all know your tastes," said Scott waving a hand as if to

end the discussion. " So am I still going to the Vienna convention

next week or not?"

" Yes, that is business," said Richard seriously. " I don't mix

business with my personal life."

Scott snorted at that. " Yes, yes…"

" Anyway I want to stay about a week after the convention ends. I

was just wondering if the company could pay for that," said Scott

looking at Richard as if to say `Don't you dare say no.'

" Hmm, I will have to think about it," said Richard sarcastically. "

I really don't see why you need the company to pay for it. You have

enough money."

" That doesn't mean I want to spend it," said Scott raking a hand

through his hair. " Don't get cheap on me."

Richard laughed at that. He had never been cheap when it came to

Scott, had spent a lot of money in keeping the man happy. Guess it

wasn't enough.

" Okay I will see what I can do. No promises," said Richard amused

at how daring Scott was. Well that is Scott for you. Scott got up

to go pausing in the doorway to say, " Is it a guy or a girl?"

" A guy, a redhead," said Richard smiling.

" Hmm, you were always a sucker for red," said Scott giving Richard a

wry smile.

Omi had woken up content with the heat emanating from the body lying

next to his. They were both exhausted after going at it all night.

Ken stirred beside him, he was starting to wake. Getting up Omi put

on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt before going downstairs. When he

entered the kitchen Omi noticed that Yohji was already up. Seemed to

have been up for a while. The blonde's hair was damp from an early

shower and he was all dressed in black.

" Ohayo Yohji," said Omi cheerily.

" Ohayo Omi, sleep well? Oh what I'm I saying you didn't sleep," said

Yohji teasing Omi. Omi blushed ten shades of red before telling

Yohji to shut up.

" It's okay Omi-kun. I looove you guys," said Yohji sarcastically.

" Are-are you okay Yohji-kun?" asked Omi quietly.

" No. I am grouchy because I didn't sleep," said Yohji turning to

read the paper.

" Why? Was it our fault?" asked Omi sitting down besides Yohji.

"No, don't worry about it kiddo. I was thinking. Hey is there anyway

you could get a phone number or something?" asked Yohji eagerly.

" Well there is but like I told you I have narrowed down to an area.

That area has about five thousand people. That is a lot of phone

numbers," said Omi smiling wryly.

" Will you tell me when you get something?" asked Yohji quietly. "

Don't tell Ken I asked."

" Sure Yohji –kun," said Omi giving Yohji a hug. " We will find him

just have a bit of faith.

" The only thing faith has done for me was screw me over," said Yohji

putting on a fake smile.

" I know," said Omi.
