"A very lovely doll "

  History

According with some reseach concerning the British Longhair, we can say that he was present at the begining of the selection of the british shorthair breed. In the last century, Louis Wain, was the first who payed attention to cats and breeding, and illustrated british longhairs in his works.

The longhair came back in the Fifties, with the introduction of Persian into the BSH lines, which had almost disappeared at the end of the war (1939-1945). This was done in order to bring the strength and roundness back into the British Shorthair breed. Nowadays, the Persian-British marriage is hardly used, but one sees there a presence of longhair in the kittens. These fluffy kittens are considered as failures, and these individuals have been sold only as pets.

But let us see what a British looks like with long hair: It is a great " loving nounours", with a semi-long coat, whose texture is very special, it is thick and soft like mohair, and, for those which hate long sequences of grooming, the coat is easy to dress, not like the full Persian coat . Just little flock at most, which one can cure by a small weekly brushing during the winter.

Pictures...

In England, the longhair can be used in breeding, is entitled to pedigree, and but is not accepted in championships. That was the only concession that was made to him by the Cat World. Regarding the hard life led by the British Shorthair, they are now being used to obtain new appearances with new breeds like the Scottish Fold and Selkirk Rex... which were worked starting from the BSH, with Scottish Fold babies with straight ears or the Selkirk Rex with the straight hair are being registered as BSH we can accept and understand why the breeders of the British have became so sensitive. Their fetish breed has become a vast dustbin. So today, do not come to speak to them about the long hair! But did these pussies, however resulting British parents, deserve such a fate?

Now, things are changing !!!

1999 : With the recognition by the TICA, in NBC, the longhairs have a great chance ! They have begun to be shown, with great succes from judges and visitors.

2000 : Another step reached by the longhairs : They are recognised in France ! They are called now British Longhair.

Some clubs in Belgium and the Netherlands have adopted them too, under the name of LOWLANDER !

About breeding...

It appears that Longhairs are helpful in improve the coat quality. And breeding BSH x BLH is highly recommended.

BLH x BLH may be good, but we noticed that it is good one time, and next time you must use a BSH, to keep this special coat quality of BLH... it seems more and more that the two versions of British breed need each other... Ever more than you could think....
