Do you know the meaning of the symbol "d" as part of the value on this South-African stamp ?

Before South-Africa became independant in 1961, its currency, like that of Britain, was:

£ (pounds) derived from the Latin word Librae,
S (schilling) derived from the Latin word Solidi and
d (pence) derived from the Latin word Denarii.
