WHO IS THE CARDINAL EMILE
BIAYENDA ? |
The Cardinal Emile BIAYENDA is born in 1927,
at Maléla-Bombé near Vindza, in the district of Kindamba (Rep of Congo).
He starts his primary studies first at M'Pangala from
1935 to 1937, then at Kindamba's catholic mission from
1937 to 1942, and finally, at Boundji's catholic mission from 1942 to 1944.
Feeling a priest vocation, he enrolls Saint Paul's "Underground Séminary"
of M'Bamouthe for secondary studie sfrom 1944 to 1950,
then Libermann "Major Seminary" of Brazzaville (present Saint-Jean middle Séminary),
in order to learn philosophy and theology from 1950 to 1958.
On 26 October 1958, he is ordinated priest by His Excellence
Monseigneur Michel BERNARD. He exercice his first pastoral ministry at the
Sainte Marie of Ouenzé parish where he is named Vicar on august 1959.
He looks after the Jean-Marie VIANEY parish of
Mouléké till the church construction, from march 1962 to
july 1965. The Abbot Emile BIAYENDA will be named Curate later.
Moreover this, his is named diocesan responsible for the Society of Mary from 1960 to 1965.
This marial movement seems dangerous for some politicians. He is so innocently tortured
with the Abbot Louis BADILA and Father ROBYR of Holy- Spirit congregation.
For the first time, he undergoes deeply in his flesh the political fights consequences
he is yet foreign. He'll wear hardly during many years, the tortures' marks of Marxist-Léninist jail's system.
On october 1965, he is sent in Lyon's Catholic Faculty from 1965
to 1969 to complete his training. He earns a licentiate in Theology
and Doctorate in Sociology. At the end of his studies,
he goes back in Brazzaville in May 1969. He is named vicar at Holy-Spirit parish of Moungali.
On 18 february 1970, he becomes Episcopal Vicar, in charge of the coordination between
various apostolate works et diocesan committees. On march 7th of the same year,
the Abbot Emile BIAYENDA is appointed Coajuteur Archbishop .
He is ordained Bishop in Rome on 17 may 1970 by Monseigneur PIGNEDOLI
then General Secretary of the Evangelization of People Congregation. At the death of
Monseigneur Théophile MBEMBA, on 14 june 1971, he occupes the Brazzaville metropolitan seat.
On wednesday 2 february 1973, he is made Cardinal by the Pope Paul VI who impose him the
"barrette Cardinalice" in may 5th of the same year. He returns in Brazzaville, on 9 may 1973
during which christian people give him a hearty reception. On 20 may 1973,
he celebrates his thanksgiving mass at Eboué stadium, surrounded by the Cardinal MALULA (Zaîre), apostolical delegate,
Monseigneur TAGLIAFERRI, african and congolese Bishops
and a many priests. Despite the strong rain, the Stadium was full up to the top of people coming
from all around the word.
He was died, assasinated, on 22 march 1977.
