What's so great about ferrets?

More and more people seem to get attached to these furry animals.  The reason for this is simple:  ferrets make excellent pets!  They are friendly, smart and a lot of fun.  Every ferret owner knows how good they are in escaping and even steal things.  They can't see very well but have an excellent hearing and smell.  Every ferret has it's own personality.  Some are more independent, while others like to hang around all the time.  Unfortunately, ferrets have a musky smell (although there are ferret lovers who really like this smell).  For males, neutering is nearly essential to reduce this smell.  Ferrets love to investigate and dig.  They love to dig in objects like carpets and couches.  Declawing in this case is not a solution since this is very painful for ferrets.  The only thing you can do is try to create a ferret-proof room where you ferret can run around without causing any problems.  Perhaps you should give them a rice, sand or dirt box to dig in!

What do I need?

Like all pets, the first thing you need to look for is a vet in your neighborhood that knows something about ferrets.  Once you found an experienced vet, you can go ahead and buy a cage.  There are many different types of cages, but a metal mesh cage is recommended.   Add a food bowl (heavy enough so your ferret can't tip it over) and a water bottle to it and your cage is nearly ready.  A t-shirt as bedding is just perfect and a hammock will be greatly appreciated.  A litter box (or several )and some ferret litter (or high quality non clumping kitty litter) is needed when you let your ferret run loose.  Recycled newspaper litter
or wood pellets are recommended over non-clumping cat litter.  It's not easy to litter train ferrets and you can expect to have accidents from time to time.  Bitter Apple can be used to stop your ferret from chewing on things.  A few drops of vitamins (like furo-vite) every day will keep your ferret in a perfect condition!  Did I forget to mention that after your cage is ready you can go ahead and adopt (there are so many ferrets free for adoption) a ferret?
