Description : In the near future, mankind has ventured into space and created orbital colonies called Sides at the Lagrange Points (6 points in Earth orbit where an object's orbit would be stable..the Moon is at one of them). As time has passed, Earth has become very heavyhanded in how it treats the Sides, and outright rebellion is brewing. This only peripherally concerns Amuro Rei, until battle breaks out on his Side. Somehow, he ends up inside of a Mobile Suit which was being developed here. Constantly skimming an operator manual, he manages to use it to repel the invaders. This Mobile Suit is known as Gundam, and is the most powerful Suit to be created thus far. Since many of the seasoned soldiers were killed early on, he and what amounts to a crew of teenage kids will have to take the Gundam and other ships and defend against the Earth forces. This is the start of what is likely the longest running giant robot series to date. As we continue, we find out that Amuro is a New Type...a new breed of human that has evolved some superior abilities. The main enemy pilot is Char Aznable, another New Type. They will go from enemies to allies to enemies and fuel a character conflict that will drive the first couple of series. "Gundam" is also notable, since it concentrated less on the giant robots themselves and more on the human characters. Gundam was just a machine...there was nothing magical or special about it, unlike the usual giant robot show of the time. This series marks a milestone in anime, due to its influence in shows to come...and to its longevity.
