CLINICAL EXPRESSION OF MALARIA: WHY MARY AND NOT JOHN

SUMMARY
Malaria, frequently caused by Plasmodium falciparum is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in tropical Africa. Its severity and frequency varies widely among individuals. Factors, genetic environmental and otherwise may account for this variation. Some of these mechanisms are discussed to try to explain why Mary gets frequent severe malaria, and John remains virtually free of the disease.
