Namie's marriage

First chapter of "Yakusoku", a book written by Emiko Taira about her daughter.

The summer of 1997, during the Tokyo Dome concert in the dressing room, Namie suddenly expressed to me..

"I want to marry......"

Of course, at that time I didn't seriously listen. I wonder is Namie has become the age when she has that desire. Namie soon continued saying.

"Mom, is it weird if I marry?"

"It's not weird but......you still have a lot of things to do?"

I was completely at a loss, and that was what I finally answered. Now that I think about it, Namie probably wanted to tell me "I want to marry." On the other hand, I think that she wanted to see my reaction at the time when she said the word "Marriage."

With that proof, a little less than a month after the Tokyo Dome public performance, I received a phonecall from Namie.

"I married Sam."

With that alone I was surprised, but Namie continued,

"I am also pregnant."

It was truly a shock. I tried hard to stay calm, I said to Namie: "I can't honestly say 'Congratulations.' Well, please get office president Taira's consent. Because President Taira is also your Tokyo father, father's consent is first right!?"

For Namie that is too coldhearted, it might have sounded like some words thrown out at her. "Nobody will say 'Congratulations,' she seemed a little disappointed. But, when she said "Marriage," I can't afford to say uncritically "That's good." Soon, I called my oldest daughter's house, "Namie finally said it to you? Isn't it good?" I was taken aback by her sister's reaction.

The truth is, my oldest daughter already knew. Older sister and younger sister. The 3 years age difference, older sister married at 18 years of age and whats more she already has 3 children. She is more than an understanding person to Namie than I am. She (older sister) also became someone whom Namie could talk to regarding her marriage.
