Fast cars, fights and friends:

Fast cars, fights and friends - but Matt Leblanc's proudest of being a mummy's boy.
From eva magazine, may 17, 1998. Retyped by Ric.

Q: Do you think you’re good looking?

Matt: Sometimes I wish I was more vain. most of the time I don't comb my hair, I don't shave and sometimes I don't even showen if I was more vain I might look a whole lot better. I only shave for the cameras. it's not really my image. Squeaky clean isn't me, that's joey.

Q: Tell us about your bedroom

Matt: I sleep in a queen-sized bed and I have two pillows and a blanket. Sometimes 1 wear t-shirts and sometimes I don't - it depends on who I'm with. I always keep the windows open. I have a great mountain view. In the morning, it's nice to wake up, look out, and feel the breeze.

Q: Still single, then?

Matt: Yeah, but hopefully the right woman will soon cross my path. life's full of little twists. The girl of my dreams could be around the corner pr sitting at a table across from me in a restaurant. I sometimes get very lonely but I've had my heart broken a few times, so I'm taking things easy for a while until I find the right person.

Q: Been out with many women?

Matt: Not recently, but I went out with a lot of girls in school. I definitely dated around. But I wasn't one of those guys who was a magnet for the girls. I had to work for it.

Q: Give us your favourite chat-up line

Matt: I'm proud to say I've never used a chat-up line in my life. I think they're a total scam. You're either really bending the truth or telling a flat-out lie

Q: Who’s no1 with you?

Matt: My mother is the most important thing in my life. I'm a mummy's boy and proud of it. girlfriends come and go, but she's always there for me. All my drive and inspiration comes from my mum. Last year I bought her a house, and that was the happiest moment of my life. I grew up in a small, rented apartment with no money. So when I gave the house to her she found it hard to accept. My aim was to make mum happy, but l never realised how happy it would make me. It made me feel good about myself and the life I'm leading.

Q: What turns you on?

Matt: Speed is sexy. with some of the money I made from friends, I bought a 1971 pantera car, which goes at more than 200mph. when I know I'm going to drive it I get that same excited feeling as when I know I'm going to be with a lover.

Q: Do you enjoy fame?

Matt: The most amazing thing is that when I was broke and couldn't afford anything, nobody cared. But now that I have some money I get sent suits of clothes and ray-ban sends me dozens of pairs of glasses, all for free. Isn't that the craziest thing?

Q: Who’s your best friend?

Matt: Matthew perry gives me money to say it’s him - but not enough. Seriously though, I go to different people for different things. David schwimmer has a good head for business, so if I want to run through a career problem, he's the one I'd talk to. matthew's realty smart about relationships and how to handle sticky situations with people. Lisa's realty intelligent and incredibly funny - she does terrific imitations that crack us all up - and courteney's the big sister type who keeps us at in order. Jennifer's always so kind, she's an angel.

Q: Ever been picked on?

Matt: Yeah. I was walking past a bar once and saw this great bike. But as I was kneeling down, checking it out, this guy came running out. He thought I was trying to steal it and he smashed me on the head with a bottle. Luckily, the blood didn't get in my eyes, so I could stilt fight. I only hit him three times, but I broke his nose, cheekbone and jaw.

Q: Still leading a wild life?

Matt: Not any more. I'm 30 now and I'm getting to the end of my self destructive days. They came out of angst, which I don't have now. I'll probably stop smoking, partying, and all that stuff in the next year or so. I've already cut way back. Really I'm a regular guy from a blue-collar background and my biggest hobbies are to fix my car, fix my bike and fix things around the house!

Q: What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done?

Matt: When I was 13 my cousin and I made a head-shaving pact. I had mine done first, but when he saw what a mess I looked he tried to chicken out. But I made him sit down in the barber's chair and have his shaved, too.

Q: Who’s your hero?

Matt: Sean connery as james bond is the coolest. When I was kid, my dad had this affinity for james bond, so it was always an event when a bond movie came out. we'd see it together - it was a great way for me and dad to be mates over this super spy guy with all these gadgets. James bond has been my hero ever since.
