The Theme Song:

The song is a wonderful pop tune from the Rembrandts with lyrics from the Kaufmanns, producers of the show. You can find it on a 4 track CD. A videoclip has been shot, the band plays and the six "friends" appear and fool around with their instruments. Except Courteney who seems to have some notion of drumming, they all look pretty clumsy. And funny. The song's jingle-jangle guitar song is played on the famouse 12 string Rickenbacker guitar made famous by the Byrds's Roger Md Guinn in the sixties (remember "Mr. Tambourine man", "Eight miles high..."). In fact the Rembrandts did a few life sets with McGuinn, available as CD bonus track. You should get to hear the full version of the song, longer of course as the "Freinds" theme version, it has an absolutely delight middle part unheard in the theme version.

The Theme Song's Lyrics:

I'll Be There For You

By The Rembrandts

So no one told you life was gonna be this way [four claps]
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but CHORUS

You're still in bed at ten and work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast so far, things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell when the world has brought you down to your knees

No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I'm best with you
Yeah!

It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but

The Theme Song:

I'm really sorry but as a musician myself, and though my own music is not available (yet?) at your local store, I think the Rembrandts deserve some royalties for their work. So, sorry again, no download here... and what about grabbing a guitar and playing it yourself? This could be fun! Anyway it can't be worse than... you know ;-).

The Guitar Chords:

Taken from the Friends FAQ

Carl Sobeski (sobeski@lf.hp.com) figured out the following guitar chords. And also thanks to Jess Lai (jlai@banda.ntu.edu.au) for filling in the "No one could ever know me" verse.
Also, a big thanks to the Friends Cafe.
