Why Space is Cool

My interest in space began shortly after reading Arthur C. Clarkes's book, 2001: A Space Oddessy. Since then I have read many more of his books and have been enthralled, enlightened and excited (yay, alliteration) by every one of his solo efforts. What I enjoy about his work is apparent most especially in his "first contact" books. They are so realistic and probable that they got me thinking about how it would be like to be alive when first contact is made, and what an amazing feeling it would be to look up to the stars and know you are not alone.

Clarke always works within the laws of physics, which makes his books realistic, but he doesn't fill them up with scientific jargon, so they are fairly easy to read. On top of all this, the guy is down to earth and has, from what I've heard, a fairly small ego. So, If you want to read books that'll make you think about space, and life, imho Clarke is your man.

Look up to the sky and realize that every single speck of light is at the very least a star, probably larger one than our sun. Many lights are in fact entire galaxies consisting of billions of other stars with wonders we can only dream of. Imagine the planets orbiting these stars and the unique properties of each planet.

Think about what an alien civilization would be like. Would there be war? Would there be two sexes? Would there be sex? Would there be substances such as drugs?

Often when I'm watching TV(Which by the way you should actually call television because "TV" is a nickname and nicknames are for friends and "TV" is no friend of mine) I wonder what aliens might think when watching the signals which come form our planet. It really and truly scares me to think that they may base their definition of who we are on the Ricki Lake show or hell, even the news, that's pretty scary in itself.em.gif - 40.8 K

Look up to the stars and planets and realize that they are real. I would really love to get stoned anywhere in space. It seems to me that doing something new when stoned or discovering something is always really fun. So imagine experiencing micro gravity stoned or looking out you window and seeing earth hanging in space. I would probably find my head spinning with new thoughts and ideas.
