Orders : vidarshana@eureka.lk For the first time in Sinhala, a book on Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), the famous French painter who is also honoured as the father of modern art is launched. This provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to the life and works of this fascinating personality. No art student or art amater can ignore studying this revolutionary post-impressionist who foresaw almost every art movement developped in the 20th century. This, without any doubt, is a major contribution to the field of art in Sri Lanka. Suriyakantha Life of Paul Cézanne 1839 Born in Aix-en- Provence (South of France). 1844 - 1859 Education. He becomes friendly with Emile Zola and, in his company, discovers nature and poetry. In 1856, he started his studies of painting. 1860 - 1862 Thanks to the support of his mother and sister, he finally gets his father's authorization to abandon the studies of law and to devote himself to painting. He leaves his city of Aix and goes to Paris ; he spends a lot of time in the Musée du Louvre. Unfortunately, some material difficulties and his failure at the admission into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts provoke his come back to his native city at the end of 1861, where he works in his father's bank. One year later, he decides to become painter and goes again to Paris. 1863 - 1865 He works in the Académie Suisse, where he meet Pissarro, Sisley and Monet. Nevertheless, he is solitary, and spends his time beween Paris and Aix. 1866 - 1867 His paintings are rejected in the Salons of 1866 and 1867. 1870 - 1871 The Franco-Prussian War drives him to L'Estaque in the proximity of Marseille in the company of Hortense Fiquet, a 19 years old model who will become his wife in 1886. Their son, born in 1872, will receive the same first name than his father, Paul. At the end of the war, he comes back to Paris. 1872 With his family, he joins Pissarro at Pontoise, and later spends his summers at Auvers-sur-Oise, where he meets docteur Gachet. 1874 At the first Impressionist Exhibition, he exhibits "The House of the Hanged Man at Auvers" and, in 1877, in the 3d Impressionist Exhibition, his paintings are booed by a majority of visitors. He exhibits in 1882 at the Salon and, till 1885, spends a great part of his time in Provence. 1885 - 1886 Difficult period which is marked by an unfortunate sentimental adventure, his break-up with Zola and the death of his father. 1887 - 1890 He does a lot of paintings , and he is invited to exhibit in Brussels by "Les XX" (1887) and in Paris at the"Décennale de l'Art français" (1889). He feels the first symptoms of diabetis, and he will be suffering of this illness till his death. Pierre-Auguste Renoir, "Portrait de Cézanne", pastel, 1880, Art Institute of Chicago. Edouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne. 1895 His first big show in Paris. This artistic event provokes many passionate controversies. 1897 - 1898 Cézanne rents a part of the Château noir ; from this location, he can see the Mont Sainte-Victoire. In 1898, he is greatly affected by the disparition of his mother. 1899 - 1900 Cézanne settles in Aix and starts to become famous in France, and also in other countries. From several years, he has in mind his big compositions of "Bathers". Autoportrait au béret, 1898-1900, Museum of Boston. 1902 He is shocked by the death of Zola. 1904 At the Salon d'Automne, his paintings are presented in a complete hall.
