Kostantinos Georgiou [Kostas] Simitis - Prime Minister

Born : in Piraeus in 1936.

Education/Profession : Studied Law at the University of Marburg, in Germany and the London School of Economics, in England. Appointed lecturer at the University of Kostanz in Germany, in 1971. Appointed lecturer at the University of Gissen until 1975. Appointed to the chair of Commercial Law at the Panteion University of Athens, in 1977. Co-founded and became secretary of the political research society "Alexandros Papanastasiou" in 1965.

Party : PASOK (Panellinio Socialistiko Kinima / Panhellenic Socialist Movement)

Political experience : Joined the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK) and elected to its council, in 1970. A founding member of PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), he co-authored the party's charter in 1974. Elected to the first central committee and the executive bureau, also in 1974. First elected to parliament for the first electoral district of Piraeus, in 1985. Resigned from PASOK's executive bureau in 1979 and was excluded from candidates' lists in the 1981 election, due to disagreement with Prime Minister and PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou. Minister for Agriculture (1981-1985). Minister for the National Economy (1985-1987). Minister for Education and Religions (1989-1990). Minister for Commerce and Minister for Industry, Research and Technology (1993-1995). Resigned from the ministry of Industry, Research and Technology and the ministry of Commerce in similar circmustances, in 1995. Elected prime minister by PASOK's central committee in January 1996, after Papandreou's resignation. Elected president of PASOK in June 1996, after Papandreou's passing. Won the elections of September 1996 and April 2000. Elected vice-president of the Socialist International in 1996.

Note : Went to self-exile during the dictatorship (1967-74) before being convicted by a courtmarshal for arson attack and use of explosives.

Nikolaos Sifounakis - Minister of the Aegean

Born : in Rethymno, on the island of Crete, in 1949.

Education/Profession : Studied architecture in Genoa, Italy, specialising in the restoration of older buildings. In 1966 he served as a member of the EDHN party's central committee just prior to the imposition of a military junta in Greece (1967-1974) - a position he re-assumed immediately after the collapse of the dictatorship, a period that coincided with noted anti-dictatorship activist Alekos Panagoulis' tenure as the party's general secretary. Served as general director of Greek state television (ERT1) between 1987-89.

Political experience : In 1981 he joined PASOK. From 1983 to February 1987 he served as prefect of the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos. June 18, 1989 he was elected as a Parliament deputy for the first time from Lesvos on PASOK's ticket. Deputy minister of Culture (1994-95). Tourism minister (1995-96). On June 30, 1996 at PASOK's 4th congress he was elected for the first time as a member of the party's central committee, with his re-election to follow at PASOK's 5th party congress in March 1999.

Giorgios Drys - Minister of Agriculture [NEW]

Born : in Potamos, on the island of Corfu, in 1944.

Education/Profession : Studied at the University of Athens and attended post-graduate studies in Automation Control Systems, in Engand. Appointed assistant professor of Automation Control Systems at the University of Patras. Elected president of the Agricultural Cooperatives' Union in 1982. Elected to the board of the Panhellenic Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives' Unions in 1983.

Political experience : Became founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement in 1974. Elected leader of the PASOK youth organisation. First elected to parliament in the seat for Corfu, in 1989. Elected member of the PASOK central committe in 1990. Elected secretary of the PASOK department of social movements in 1994. December 2001 Deputy Minister of Finance.

Dr.Evangelos Venizelos - Minister of Culture

Born : in Thessaloniki in 1957.

Education/Profession : Studied law at Thessaloniki University and attended post-graduate studies in France, at Paris II University. Appointed member of the bar of the Council of State and the Arios Pagos courts. Elected member of the central council of the University of Thessaloniki Students' Union and the National Students' Union of Greece, in 1974. Completed his Doctorate in 1980. Appointed lecturer at the University of Thessaloniki and shortly after was elected to the chair of Constitutional Law, in 1984. Appointed member of the Committee for Local Radio Stations (where he submitted proposals for the first private broadcasting licenses) and member of the board of directors of the National Bank of Greece, in 1988.

Political experience : Elected member of the central committee of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in 1990. First elected to Parliament in the seat of Thessaloniki in 1993. Has held the positions of Deputy Minister for the Presidency and government spokesman (1993-1994), Minister for the Press and Mass Media (1994-1995), Minister for Transport and Communications (1995-1996), Minister for Justice (1996), Minister for Culture (1996-99), Minister of Development (1999-2000).

Akis Tsohatzopoulos - Minister of Development [NEW]

Born : in Thessaloniki in December 1939

Education/Profession : Finished high school in that city. He studied in Munich (Germany), where he obtained a Bachelor' s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1964 and a Master' s Degree in Economics-Engineering in 1967. He was employed by technical companies and consulting firms in Germany and from 1975 until 1981 he had his own business of technical studies and consultancy in Greece.

Party : PASOK (Panellinio Socialistiko Kinima / Panhellenic Socialist Movement)

Political experience : Begins during the Military Dictatorship (1967&endash;74), when he actively participates to the anti-junta struggle and becomes a member of the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK). After the collapse of the junta he becomes a founding member of PASOK and participates uninterruptedly since 1974 to its principal organs. From 1981 until June 1988, Greece's Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou appoints him consecutively as Minister for Public Works, Minister by the Prime Minister, Minister to the Presidency of the Government, Labour, Interior and Public Order. In November 1990 he is elected Secretary of PASOK's Central Committee. In May 1994 he is re-elected at the same post, where he remains until 1995. In 1993, he is appointed as Minister for the Interior in PASOK's new government. In March 1995 he is elected Vice-President of the European Socialist Party, a position he is re-elected in June 1997. In September 1995, he is appointed as Minister for the newly-created Ministry for the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation. From November 1995 until January 1996, he is the acting Prime Minister. From January 1996, he serves again as Minister for the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation in Costas Simitis' government until the September 1996 elections. Since September 1996 he is appointed as Minister of National Defence.

Vasiliki "Vasso" Papandreou - Minister of Environment, Town Planning, and Public Works [Changed]

Born : in Valimitika, near Aigion, in 1944.

Education/Profession : Studied at the School of Economic and Trade Sciences (ASOEE) and attended post-graduate studies at the University of Reading, in the UK.

Political experience : A Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) founding member, she was elected member of the party's central committee and the executive bureau in 1974. First elected to parliament in the party's national ticket in 1985 and re-elected in 1993 and 1996 in the second electoral district of Athens. Appointed to the Executive Commission of the European Union - the first woman ever to hold the position. Elected member of the PASOK political secretariat in 1996. Has held the positions of Deputy Minister for Industry, Research and Technology (1985), Alternate Minister for IR and T (1986-87), Alternate Minister for Commerce (1988) and Minister for Development (1996-99). Minister of Environment, Town Planning, and Public Works in december 2000.

Nikos Christodoulakis - Minister of Economy and Finance [Changed]

Born : in Armeni, Chania, in 1952

Education/Profession : Studied at the Athens Polytechnic and attended post-graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, in England. Appointed professor of Economic Analysis at the Economic University of Athens and at the department of Applied Economics of the University of Cambridge, in 1984. Appointed consultant at the European University of Florence in 1989. Appointed professor at the University of Prague and research fellow at the London School of Economics, in 1992.

Education/Profession : Studied sociology at Amherst College in Masachussetts and attended post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics. Elected vice-president of the Fellows Research and Continuing Education Center of Harvard University, member of theboard of the Foundation for Meditarranean Studies and member of the board of the Georgios Papandreou Foundation.

Political experience : First elected to parliament in the seat of Achaia in 1981. Elected member of the PASOK central committee in 1984. Education/Profession : Studied civil engineering at the University of Thessaloniki and worked in private sector until 1990. A former member of the Community Youth of Greece (KNE), he joined the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in 1978. Elected secretary of the Union of Pella Engineers in 1981.

Education/Profession : Studied Economic Science at the Universities of Athens, Wisconcin (USA) and Cambridge (UK). Appointed lecturer at the Economics Department of the Athens Law School and researcher at the Center for Programming and Economic Research (KEPE), in 1977.

Petros Efthimiou - Minister of Education and Religions

Born : in Larissa, central Greece, in 1950.

Education/Profession : Studied Philosophy at the University of Ioannina. As a working journalist he served as editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper "Socialist Course" from 1975 to 1977. Between 1980 and 1985 he was managing editor of the political affairs magazine "Anti", while in 1986 he was a political reporter for the Athens Sunday paper "To Vima". Served as a special adviser to the New Generation Undersecretariat (1982-85) and as general secretary of Press and Information (1985). Between 1988-98 he was news director at the radio station "TOP-FM" and director at the same broadcaster between 1989-1990.

Political experience : He was elected to the Euro-parliament as a deputy for the first time with PASOK's ticket in the June 1999 elections. He assumes his first government post.

Christos Protopappas - Minister of Press and Mass Media [NEW]

Education/Profession : Graduate of the Department of Management of the University of Economic and Commercial Sciences. Since 1978, he has been an employee at the National Bank of Greece. During 1984-85, he was elected president of the National Bank's Employee Association. During 1986-89, he was elected member of the Board of Directors of the Athens' Labour Center. In 1989 and for the two consecutive elections to follow, he was elected President of the Hellenic Banks Employee Confederation (OTOE).

Political experience : ince 1974, he was an active member of the Youth Movement, fighting for democracy and quality in education. During 1977-78, he was a member of the Board of his University's Student Association. After his graduation, he became actively involved with the Labour Syndicalism Movement. On the 22nd of September 1996, he was elected Congressman of the B' Periphery of Athens with the Socialists Panhellinic Party (PASOK). Thereafter, he becameDeputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. A position that he retains till today, after his re-election as a Congressman on April 9, 2000. He has been elected four times member of the PASOK's Central Committee,during the 2nd (1990), the 3rd (1994), the 4th (1996) and the 5th (1999) Party's Conferences. For consecutive years, he wasDeputy Secretary of the PASOK's Department of Syndicalism and Secretary of the Panhellenic Socialists Workers Organization (PASKE). In 1994, he was elected Municipal Counselor in the Municipality of Athens.

Khristos Varelis - Minister of Transport and Communications

Born : in Athens in 1950.

Education/Profession : Studied chemisty of University of Thessaloniki and attended post-graduate studies in Germany. Worked in the chemical industry and was appointed special consultant to the Ministry of Commerce in 1984. Elected member of the board of the Greek Communities in Germany and the Union of Greek Chemists, in 1985. Appointed CEO of the Greek Refineries of Aspropyrgos (ELDA) and president of the natural gas company "Asprophos" in 1986. Appointed president of the Public Petrol Corporation and the Public Gas Corporation in 1993.

Political experience : First elected to parliament in 1996 in the seat of Aitoloakarnania, but his election was annuled by the Electoral Court in May 1997.Has held the position of deputy minister of the Environment, Town Planning and Public Works (1996-2000).

Fotios Hatzimichalis - Deputy Minister of Agriculture

Born : in Elassona, central Greece, in 1957.

Education/Profession : Studied economics at the University of Athens. Served as president of the University of Athens' economics school students' union for three years. A member on the central committee of Greece's national federation of student unions (EFEE) from 1980-83 as a representative of PASP.

Political experience : PASOK's affiliated students' grouping. A member of PASOK since 1975, in 1979 he was elected a member of the party's youth section committee, responsible for university student affairs. A candidate for the Athens municipal elections in 1982. Between 1982-87 served as alternate secretary in PASOK's youth section committee. In 1984 at PASOK 1st party congress he was elected a member of its central committee. Between 1987-89 he served as secretary of PASOK's youth. In 1989 he was elected on the party's executive bureau and in 1990 re-elected during PASOK's 2nd congress. Served as an adviser to the education ministry and the New Generation undersecretariat. He was elected to Parliament for the first time in October 1993 from the Larissa prefecture on PASOK's ticket. On Oct. 22, 1993 he was elected as a secretary in Parliament. He was re-elected to PASOK's central committee in April 1994 during the party's 3rd congress, with other re-elections following during the 4th and 5th congresses. He has served as vice-president on Parliament's educational affairs committee and secretary of its culture section, as well as secretary of PASOK's expatriate Greeks section. He assumes his first government post.

Evangelos Argyris - Deputy Minister of Agriculture

Born : in Rodotopi, Ioannina prefecture in NW Greece, in 1952.

Education/Profession : A graduate of the industrial ministry's mechanical engineering school. Farmer/ Agri-cooperative member. President of the Panhellenic (national) Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives (PASEGES) since 1990 and vice-president of the European Agricultural Confederation (CEA). In 1982 he was elected as president of the Ioannina Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (EASI) while in 1987 he was elected president of PASEGES' board of directors. In 1986 and 1990 he was re-elected as president of EASI. Served as EASI's representative on the Ioannina prefectural council, vice-president on the board of the Epirus-based Dodoni S.A. dairy producer and as a board member of the companies Epirus S.A. and Elviz S.A. He was PASEGES' representative on the board of the Greek Centre for Competitiveness (ELKEPA) and the Hellenic Export Promotion Organisation (HEPO).

Political experience : A founding member of PASOK in Ioannina prefecture in 1974, he served as a member on the party's prefectural committee for many years. In 1993 he was elected for the first time to Parliament from Ioannina prefecture on PASOK's ticket. On April 17, 1994 at PASOK's 3rd congress Argyris was elected as an alternate member on the party's central committee, followed by his election as a full member to the party's central committee during the 4th PASOK congress in June 1996. On Oct. 22, 1996 he was elected as vice-president on Parliament's production and commerce committee. In March 1999 at the party's 5th congress he was re-elected to PASOK's central committee. He assumes his first government post.

Athanasios "Nasos" Alevras - Deputy Minister of Culture [Changed]

Political experience : Served as a member of the Alexandroupoli municipal council as well as chairman of the same council. In 1982 he served as a member of PASOK's prefectural committee in Evros prefecture, while between 1985-89 he served as president of the children's summer camps in Makri, Evros prefecture. In 1988 he served as secretary on a committee for PASOK's organisational conference. In 1989 he was elected to Parliament for the first time in Evros prefecture on PASOK's ticket. Served as a member of Parliament's labour affairs group on issues related to the labour ministry. On Jan. 22, 1996 he was appointed to his first government post, deputy minister of agriculture, during the premiership of Costas Simitis. Following the September 1996 elections he was appointed as secretary general of the national economy ministry.

Education/Profession : Studied agronomy and philosophy as the University of Florence, Italy. A member of the Lambraki Democratic Youth during his school years, during the military junta in Greece (1967-1974) he was active in the anti-dictatorial struggle through the ranks of the PAM group overseas. Between 1978-1981 he worked at the literary and cultural centre "Ora" as the chief editor of an annual arts & letters volume entitled "To Chroniko" (The chronicle). Served as a press attache in the Greek embassies of Bucharest and London (1981-87). In 1987 he assumed the post of special secretary in the General Secretariat of the Press and Information.
