MINISTERS

Jean-Claude Juncker - Prime Minister

Born : on December 9, 1954 in Rédange-sur-Attert

Education : Elementary school in Belvaux (Coal-Basin) and secundary school at the "Ecole de Clairefontaine" (1967-1974) Received a hihg school level certificate from the Lycée Michel Rodange in Luxemburg-City. De 1975 à 1979, higher studies in the Law Faculty of the University of Strasbourg where he graduated with a B.LL degree of Law in 1979. He becamle a sworn lawyer in February 1980.

Party : PCS / CSV (Social Christian Party of Luxemburg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs)

Political experience : State Secretary for Labour and Social Welfare in December 1982. Minister of Labour and Finance in Prime Minister Jacques Santer's government from July 14, 1989 to July 12 1994. President of the Council of ministers for Social Affairs in the European Community, of the Economy, of Finance and tthe Budget , as well as President of the intergovernmental Conference on Economic and monetary Union during the first semester of 1991. Minister of Labour and Finance from July 13,1994 to January 20,1995. 20 janvier 1995, Prime Minister following the departure of Mr.Jacques Santer, appointed President of the European Commission.

MadameLydie Polfer - Deputy-Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade

Born : on November 22, 1952 in Luxembourg

Education : In 1972, completed her secundary studies in the Lycée Robert Schuman. 4 years later she graduated with a BLL in Law from Grenoble University. 1977, post-graduate higher degreein European Integration at the Universitary Centre for International and European Research in Grenoble.

Party : PDL/DP (Parti Démocratique du Luxembourg / Demokratesch Partei / Democratic Party)

Political experience : 1982-1999, Burgmaster of Luxemburg-City, reelected in 1987 and 1993. Member of the European Parliament from 1985 to 1989 and from 1990 to 1994. Since 1994 Chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

Fernand Boden - Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development

Born : on September 13, 1943 in Echternach

Education : Certificate of high school level in the "Lycée classique d'Echternach".Completes his studies at the "Cours supérieurs de Luxembourg" then in the University of Liège to be a teacher in mathématics and physics. Doctorate of mathematics and physics, he between 1966 and 1978 he was a teacher at the Lycée classique d'Echternach.

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien-Social du Luxembourg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs)

Political experience : Deputy-Mayor in the town of Echternach from 1970 to 1976. In 1978, Member of Parliament from the Social Christian Party in the Eastern constituency. Re-elected in 1979, joins the Government as minister of National Education and Youth and Minister of Tourism. He had the very same portfolios until 1989. In 1989, Minister for the Family and Solidarity as well as Minister for the Middle Classes and Tourism. June 1994, also Minister for the Civil Service and held these functions until January 26,1995. Minister of Agriculture, of Viticulture and Rural Development , Minister for the Middle Classes and Tourism as well as Minister for Housing from 1995 to 1999. Following the elections of June 1999, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture, of Viticulture and Rural Development again, Minister for the Middle Classes, of Tourism and Housing.

MadameMarie-Josée Jacobs - Minister of the Family, of Social Solidarity and Youth

Born : on January, 1950 in Marnach- North of the country

Education : High School in Ste Anne Public School in Ettelbruck; Nursing studies. Graduated in 1969 and received her nurse-anaesthetist diploma in 1973.

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien Social /Social Christian Party of Luxemburg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs)

Political experience : 1967 Chairwoman of the Social-Christian Party {Parti Chrétien Social (PCS)} of the northern region constituency.1984, Member of Parliament elected for the first time in the northern constituency. Re-elected in 1989 and 1994. In 1987, joined the communal Council of Luxemburg-City. December 9, 1992, was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development , also deputy- Minister for Cultural issues. Re-elected during the legislative elections of June 12, 1994, and she got the same ministerial portfolios in the Government set up by Prime Minister Jacques Santer. January 26,1995, aqppointed Minister for the Family, Minister for Women's Promotion, Minister for the Disabled and Victims of an accident. June 13, 1999, re-elected member of Parliament in the Northern constituency on a PCS ticket. Since August 7, 1999 she's been holding the function of Minister of the Family, of Social Solidarity and Youth and Minister for Women's Promotion.

MadameErna Hennicot-Schoepges - Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research

Born : on July 24, 1941 in Dudelange

Education : Teacher at the Academy of Music in Luxemburg-City.

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien-Social du Luxembourg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs/Christian Social Party of Luxemburg)

Political experience : July 24, 1979, elected Member of Parliament on a Social Christian ticket in the Centre constituency.From 1979 to 1984, chairwoman of the Committee for Education and Culture. Chairwoman of the House of Deputies with no interruption from July 18,1989 until her assignement on January 26, 1995 as a minister. Since February 4 , 1995, Chairwoman of the Social Christian Party. Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, Minister of Culture and Minister for the Cults in Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's Government since January 26, 1995. Since August 7, 1999, Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research and Minister for Public Works.

Michel Wolter - Minister of Home Affairs

Born : on September 13, 1962 in Luxemburg

Education : Elementary school in Esch-sur-Alzette. High school in Esch-sur-Alzette, then in Echternach. 1985, a B.Sc degree in economical sciences, with a major in international economics in the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne)

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien-Social du Luxembourg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs/Social Christian Party of Luxemburg)

Political experience : Member of the Social Christian Party since 1980. Elected for the first time in 1984 at the House of Deputies.Re-elected during the legislative elections of 1989, 1994 and 1999. Member of the Committee of Finance and the Budget, he was appointed chairman of the budget project for the 1992 and 1995 mandates.Also Vice-president of the Committees for Sports and Youth. Held a mandate of communal Councillor in the town of Esch-sur-Alzette from January 1988 to August 1992.From January 1st, 1994 to January 25, 1995 he was a communal Councillor in the Commune of Bascharage. Minister of Home Affairs, Minister for Civil Service and the Administrative Reform from January 26, 1995. Following the legislative and the European elections of June 13, 1999- Minister of Home Affairs.

Luc Frieden - Minister of Justice

Born : on September 16, 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette

Education : Elementary school in Esch-sur-Alzette. High school at the "Lycée de Garçons" in Esch and at the Athénée in Luxemburg. 1982- received a high school level degree (in classics- and economical sciences). Studied Law in the "Centre universitaire de Luxembourg" and in the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne).1986, B.LL in Business Law. 1987, Master of Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy in the University of Cambridge (U.K). 1988, Master of Law from the Harvard Law School in the U.S. Also attended a course in the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien-Social du Luxembourg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs/Social Christian Party of Luxemburg)

Political experience : June 12, 1994 M.P of the Centre constituency on a Social Christian Party ticket. Sat in the House of Deputies from July 1994 to February 1998. Chairman of the Committee for Finance and the Budget and Chairman of the Committee for the Institutions and Constitutional Revision. February 4, 1998 appointed Minister of Justice, Minister of the Budget and Minister for the Relations with Parliament. Entrusted with the coordination of governmental tasks dealing with the introduction of the European unique currency in Luxemburg. August 7, 1999 Minister of Justice and Minister of the Treasury and the Budget. Governor of the World Bank since February 4, 1998.

MadameAnne Brasseur - Minister of National Education, Vocational Training and Sports

Born : On May 19, 1950 in Luxemburg

Education : High school level degree in 1969. Higher studies in psychology in the universities of Tübingen and Mannheim-Germany. 1975, degree in psychology.

Party : PDL/DP (Parti Démocratique du Luxembourg / Demokratesch Partei / Democratic Party)

Political experience : 1975, communal councillor in Luxemburg-City. 1979, M.P. Member of the Committee for Finance and the Budget and of the Committee for Public Force. Member of the Committee for the Medias, Research and Culture.Vice-president of the Committee for Transport and public works. June 13, 1999 elected M.P in the Centre constituency on a PDL ticket. Aug.7, 1999 appointed Minister of National Education,Vocational Training and Sports.

Henri Grethen - Minister of the Economy

Born : On July 16, 1950 in Esch-sur-Alzette

Education : Elementary school in his hometown. High school in the "Lycée classique"of Echternach. 1969, high school level degree. Universitary courses in Luxemburg and in the University of Liège from 1971 to 1975.

Party : PDL/DP (Parti Démocratique du Luxembourg / Demokratesch Partei / Democratic Party°)

Political experience : 1980 - 1989, General Secretary of the Democratic Party. Held this charge until 1989. Since 1994, held the same function. 1984, elected to the House of Deputies. Re-elected in 1989, 1994 and 1999. President of the parliamentarian Group of his party from 1989 on and Vice-president of the Parliament since 1998. August 7, 1999 appointed Minister of the Economy and Minister of transport.

Charles Goerens - Minister for Cooperation, Humanitarian Action and Defense

Born : on February 6, 1952 in Ettelbrück

Education : Elementary school in Schieren. High school in Carlsbourg, Belgium, in the "lycée moderne", then in the " lycée technique agricole".

Party : PDL/DP (Parti Démocratique du Luxembourg / Demokratesch Partei / Democratic Party°)

Political experience : 1979, elected in the first place on the Democratic Party's ticket in the Northern constituency. Reelected in 1984, 1989, 1994 and 1999. Elected to the European Parliament from 1982 to 1984. President of the UEO Assembly from 1987 to 1994. From 1989 to 1994, Chairman of the Democratic Party. 1995, the Prime minister entrusted him with the writing of a report about the role of national parliaments within the European Union. On August 7 , 1999 he was appointed Minister for Cooperation, Humanitarian Action and Defense, and Minister of Environment.

Carlo Wagner - Minister of Health and Social Welfare

Born : on July 3, 1953 in Wormeldange

Education : High school in the "Athénée de Luxembourg". In Fribourg, Switzerland he received a universitary degree in economical and social sciences.

Political experience : 1994, elected to the House of Deputies. Vice-president of the Committee for Agriculture and Viticulture and of the Committee for the Middle Classes and Housing. 1994, mayor of the Commune of Wormeldange.1999, reelected M.P in the Eastern constituency on a PDL ticket. 1999, appointed Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

François Biltgen - Minister of Labour and Employment

Born : on September 28, 1958

Education : Universitary studies in Law and Political Sciences in Paris. 1994, judiciary degree.

Party : PCS / CSV (Parti Chrétien-Social du Luxembourg / Christlich-Soziale Volkspartei Luxemburgs/Social Christian Party of Luxemburg)

Political experience : 1987, elected to the communal Council of Esch-sur-Alzette. 1997, took his functions of deputy-mayor entrusted with finance and social affairs. 1994, elected to the House of Deputies. On June 13 , 1999 elected M.P in the Southern constituency on the PCS ticket. On August 7 1999 he was appointed Minister of Labour and Employment, Minister for the Relations with Parliament , Minister for the Cults and Deputy Minister for Communications.

Born : on December 4, 1960 in Bettembourg

Education : Elementary school in Howald and high school in the " Lycée de Garçons à Luxembourg".

Political experience : 1994, elected M.P. Vice-president of the Committees for National Education and Vocational Training, the Family, Youth and Sports as well as Environment and Town and Country Planning. 13 juin 1999, reelected M.P in the Southern constituency on a PDL ticket. On August 7, 1999 appointed State Secretary for Environment.
