Leszek Miller - Prime Minister

Born : July 3, 1946, in Yrardów, near Warsaw.

Education/Profession : He began his first job at the end of the 1960s, working as an electrician at the Flax Industry Plant in his hometown. He became a member of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) in 1969, and graduated in 1977 with a degree in political science from the Academy of Social Sciences, affiliated with the PZPR Central Committee. After graduation, became a full-time employee with the PZPR. Between 1977 and 1982, he worked in the PZPR Central Committee and in 1986-1989 was the secretary of the PZPR Provincial Committee in Skierniewice. In 1988, he was appointed a secretary of the PZPR Central Committee, and a year later he entered the party's Politburo.

Party : Democratic Left Alliance

Political experience : Between 1994 and 1997, Miller chaired the Council of Ministers Socio-Economic Committee and-on the government's side-the joint committee of the government and the Episcopate of Poland. Since October 1997 Miller has been chairman of the SLD Caucus. In 1999, after the election structures of SLD were united and transformed into a uniform political party, Miller was chosen as the party's chairman at its first party congress, in December 1999.

Stanislaw Zelichowski - Minister of Environmental

Born : 9 April 1994, in Ksiostany (Zamojskie Voivodship).

Études/Profession : Graduated from Faculty of Forestry, The Main College of Rural Management, in Warsaw (1967). Began his professional experience in Presidium of the County National Council, in Ostrolka. In 1969 employed in Ciechanów Forest Inspectorate as lecturer. Since 1974 - Forest Inspector in Dwukoly Forest Inspectorate.

Expérience Politique : 1987-1989 - Chairman, Voivodship National Council, in Ciechanów. Member of the National Forestry Council. Since 1970 member of the United Peasants' Party - acted, inter alia, as Presidium Member, Commission for Forestry and Environmental Protection at the Supreme Committee of the United Peasants' Party. On 5 May 1990, during Unity Congress of the Polish Peasants' Party, elected as Member of the Party's Supreme Council, then, Member of the Party's Supreme Executive Committee, Chairman of the Party's Voivodship Board, in Ciechanów. In 1993-1997 acted as Minister of Environmental Protection Natural Resources and Forestry.

Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz - Minister of Foreign Affairs

Born : in Warsaw, 13 September 1950.

Education/Profession : Graduated from the Department of Law of the University of Warsaw in 1972. In 1978 he was awarded an LL.D. with specialisation in public international law. In the years 1972-1985, he worked first as an assistant lecturer and subsequently as an adjunct professor at the Institute of International Law of the University of Warsaw. His scientific interests focused on preferences granted to developing countries in international trade and on a possible revision of the UN Charter. From 1980 until 1981 he was a Fulbright Foundation fellow at Columbia University in New York. As a student and during the first years of his employment at the University, he was active in studentsí and political organisations.

Political experience : Member of Parliament since 1989, throughout its three successive terms. In the 1993 election, he won 82 per cent of the votes cast for his political formation in the province of Bialystok /north-eastern Poland/. In 1990-1991, he was the Chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus of the Democratic Left Alliance. In 1990 he ran in Polandís first general presidential election. In 1991, together with the incumbent President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski, he initiated the establishment of the Democratic Left Alliance. Founder of the ëPoland in Europeí Foundation of Social Initiatives. In 1992- 1993 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and rapporteur of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights. From October 1993 until March 1995 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice. From March 1995 until February 1996 he was Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm /lower House of Parliament/. Since 7 February 1996 he has been the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, and since 16 October 1996 the Chairman of the Committee for European Integration.
