Installation. Nov 2001.

Kallio Kipinöi Festival.
On the outdoor Iceskating of Kallio, Brahen Kenttä, in Helsinki, Finland.

Ice, silver gelatine, graphic film prints.

Variable dimension:
200 m2 for the photos inlay into the ice surface.
4m x 3m x 1,30m for the structures of ice and gelatine.

Straight after i finished to built the installation on Tuesday, the 20 of November 2001. Everything is still there.

The day after, one picture has been already kicked by icehockey player or kids letting a big hole in the monuments, on both side.
The next day, on thursday 22 of November, a big snow storm happened in Helsinki, more than 30cm of snow.
The city, at the same time than cleaning the surface of the iceskating with the big snowcat machine, destroyed at my installation, thinking it was a big mountain of snow.

The frozen photographs monuments was destroyed before the opening day of the Kallio kipinöi festival on Friday the 23 of November.
It looks like that people don't like Monuments and they're right. No more Monuments. so maybe they will be never cause for it.
Mine went away a bit too fast, but finally that was the meaning , to let it melt and dissapear.

The installation was divided in two parts.

The first one was actually what is shown on the pictures.
I froze into the surfaces of the iceskating around 50 photographs, print on graphic film. They were 50 portrait of children from the school of Käpylä.
we actually can't see them anymore, hided by the thickness of the iceskating and the white snow. they were visible before the beginning of the installation, and will be visible at the end of the winter.

the second part of the installation was what you've seen in the first pictures, above. A standing up cryogenic Monuments for photographs.

Some of the 50 photographs inlay into the surfaces of the iceskating and frozen until the spring.

here is a close up of one picture, photographs, organic print on silver gelatine, frozen into an iceblock, destroyed and kept fix at the same time, stock in the compact structures of ice.
