The Devil's Own
(November 1999)
"Fucking shit!," said Yohji running ahead of Ken and Omi through the
building, " I am not paid this much to fucking have to run away from
a
bomb."
" Balinese, where the hell is Abyssian?" said Ken running behind
Yohji. The building was like a labyrinth. All the halls seemed to
lead into each other, everything except the way out.
"Shit! Another fucking door!" said Yohji kicking the door and
becoming more agitated than he already was. His golden kissed hair was
sticking to his face, his lips in a thin line as he kept thinking how
many minutes they had left before the whole building blew sky high.
"Bombay, did you find any info about a way out in the building?"
asked Ken to Omi who was also showing signs of fear and nervousness. Omi
simply shook his head and looked behind them to see if Aya was coming.
" Balinese, Abyssian has not reported in yet," said Ken with an edge
of anger in his voice. The brunette was becoming more exasperated
with every minute that went by. He felt like a lab rat running
through a maze and a sick scientist laughing at them.
"Abyssian!" screamed Yohji into his mouthpiece. Static crackled in
the earpiece and he could vaguely make out what was being said.
"Abyssian you are breaking up," said Yohji.
" Too.......one.....exit." was all Yohji was
able to make out from
what he was hearing.
"Siberian maybe he is hurt," said Omi turning pleading cerulean eyes
at him.
" Tch, fuck," said Ken rubbing his eyes with his arm, " Balinese we
can't stand here all night our we will all be fried not only
Abyssian.
He can find his way out."
" How if we can't even find it?" asked Omi angry. Ken only gave him
a heated glare and taking the initiative started to run. After a few
steps the other two started to follow him.
"How long?" asked Yohji
"Two minutes," said Omi a little bit out of breath.
"Shit, lets jump out of it, I'll rather have a broken leg," said Ken
running and looking if he could find any windows.
"You hear that Abyssian, get the fuck out of the building," said
Yohji into his mouthpiece.
".Copy," said Aya, who was dealing with his own problems.
"Abyssian stop whatever the hell you are doing and just try to get
out, forget the target!" said Yohji angry.
"He is still fighting!?" asked Ken eyebrows shooting up incredulous.
"Window!" screamed Omi and he shot a bow at it breaking the window.
"Shit we are about seven floors up," said Yohji looking out.
"You have a better idea?" asked Ken who by now was furious with his
luck.
"The gods help me," said Yohji before they began to feel a rumbling
in the floor.
"Its off, its off!," screamed Omi before he was pushed out of the
window by Yohji who soon followed and was trailed by Ken.
The whole building started collapsing on itself, it looked like
someone was stepping on the building causing it to become compact.
"Abyssian is in there!" screamed Omi as he limped from the building
following Yohji and Ken.
Smoke and heat engulfed them burning their skin and scalding their
eyes.
"Damn it!," said Yohji as smoke tears streaked down his tanned cheeks.
"Yohji I didn't see anybody come out of the building after us," said
Omi who also had smoke tears running down his cheeks.
"Maybe he got out before," said Yohji trying not to look worried.
"Maybe he didn't," said Ken obviously worried. Yohji shot him a
warning look. Sirens could be heard at the distance.
"Damn it, where is he?" asked Ken shifting and searching the grounds
to see any sign of their teammate. Suddenly out of the smoke a
figure could be seen but the way he was holding himself up was wrong.
"Yohji its Aya!, " said Omi starting to run toward Aya. Aya looked
terrible, his face was full of scrapes as well as blood. He was
dragging one of his legs and his right arm was at a wrong angle.
Upon seeing them he stopped and just stared.
"Aya?" asked Yohji seeing an odd look come into Aya's eyes. The
amethyst orbs looked glassy, as if there was no one there.
"Something is wrong with him," said Ken but Yohji was no longer
listening to him, he was running to get hold of their leader who was
falling to the ground.
Yohji managed to get a hold of him before he fell and cradled Aya's
head in his lap," Ken get the car." Ken left leaving him with Omi and
Aya.
"Aya hold on, we will fix you up just wait a while," said Yohji
soothingly while he stroked Aya's hair out of his face.
"Yo-Yohji?" asked Aya softly while opening his eyes. He looked at
Yohji with a curious light in his eyes and before he said anything
fainted.
"Yohji maybe he has a concussion," said Omi worriedly when he noticed
how Aya's eyes didn't seem to focus right when he first looked at them.
"Aya, Aya wake up," said Yohji gently shaking Aya. When he didn't
respond he gently slapped his face trying to get him to open his eyes.
"Aya-kun, please open your eyes," said Omi. Aya opened his eyes and
Yohji and Omi beamed at him.
"Good boy, you had us worried," said Yohji smiling shakily.
Aya stared at them a while and then his eyes started to roll back in
their sockets.
"Fuck! Aya listen to me you have to keep awake," said Yohji slapping
Aya once more.
Ken finally arrived with the car," Guys!," Omi held the door open for
Yohji as he settled in the back with Aya cradled in his arms. Omi
frowned a little at the weird motherly behavior Yohji was displaying
but he figured Yohji was as worried as they were.
"Ken we have to get home fast," said Omi quietly, " I think Aya has a
concussion."
Ken nodded but didn't say a word. He was angry Omi could tell, Ken
would blame it on Aya's stubbornness to follow orders. However, Ken
and Aya often clashed when it came to who gave the orders.
" I fucking told him to get the hell out," said Ken slamming a fist
into the steering wheel.
Omi just looked at him and looked back at Aya who seemed to have
problems staying awake since Yohji kept slapping him to wake up. What
a fucked up night.
Upon arriving at their apartments they all started tending to each
other's wounds. Ken had a broken wrist, Omi had scraped his hands
and legs, Yohji had hit his head and needed some stitches, Aya.well
Aya needed more since he had broken his right arm, his ankle was twisted
and swelling and he was concussed. The mission had been a disaster,
however, their client had no reason to complain since the target was
death thanks to Aya's stubbornness. Yohji had insisted in taking
care of their red headed teammate even though Omi had asked if he could do
it. Yohji just sat at the edge of the bed hearing Aya's breathing. He had
gotten a fever, which meant he was more injured than he let on.
Yohji just stared at Aya's porcelain face and his parted lips. It was
curious to him how much he loved watching Aya sleep, even though this
was not a peaceful one. Yohji got up to dip the towel in water and
put it again in Aya's forehead. It was as if the red head had a
death wish, which was not very far from the truth. About six months ago
his sister had died. The doctor said it was just a matter of time since
the girl was brain dead. Aya had not wanted to accept it, but at the
end relented. Yohji thought that he gave up just because he had told
Aya if his sister would like to live like a vegetable. He still
remembered the argument; Aya punched him for saying that, and left
the house. A few hours later he had come back, his eyes puffed up as if
he had been crying and Yohji instantly knew that it was done. Sadly,
after that Aya had never been the same. If he had been closed off
when his sister was in a coma, now it was worse. He didn't listen,
went out at night and constantly got drunk and got into fights.
Yohji had been there one of those nights.
"Are you my friend?" Aya had drawled. Yohji had only stared at him
for his question.
"Yes," he had said. Aya had laughed a hysterical laugh and then it
turned into a wail. Aya had doubled over clutching his stomach and
just screamed. Omi and Ken had come down armed and scared. Yohji
was scared too, he tried to calm Aya down by saying that he was his
friend, however, Aya would have none of it.
"I hate you!" Aya screamed, " You are not my friend! You should have
stopped me! Stopped me from killing her! you let me kill my own
blood!, bastard!"
Omi, Ken, and him had only stared at Aya crying on the floor. He
kept mumbling how much he hated Yohji and then he would laugh and start
crying again. Yohji had blamed it on the alcohol, laughing it off
and saying that Aya was trashed. However, he knew deep inside that Aya
resented him for this. That explained why Aya avoided talking to
him, or having to go to missions with him. Before, him and Aya had always
paired of, now he paired with Ken or Omi if he was forced into it,
usually he was alone.
Alone, like tonight. That is the reason why Aya was now unconscious
in his bed and hurt, because he had gone alone. The three of them
had not wanted to get into another argument and had settled to allowing
Aya to go alone.
"Damn you," said Yohji under his breath looking at Aya in pain. That
is why Yohji felt he had to make it up to him. Make Aya trust him
again. Aya had trusted him and he betrayed him in the worst way
possible. Aya had needed someone to tell him it was the right thing
to do but he had yelled at him. Yohji was brought back from his
reverie by Aya's moaning.
"Aya?" asked Yohji, " can you hear me?" Aya opened his eyes and
stared at Yohji as if it was he first time he was seeing him.
"Yohji?" Aya asked quietly.
" Yeah, you had us scared for a while. The mission was completed
thanks to you, even though all of us are hurt. You have a broken
arm, a messed up ankle, a concussion, and a fever." Said Yohji trying to
smile.
Aya looked at him and said, " Oh goodie."
Yohji's jaw almost dropped when he heard Aya's attempt of a joke. He
hadn't talked to him for almost six months and now he was joking?
"Aya, I know this must be a bad time but believe me, I am really
sorry about your sister," said Yohji suddenly becoming fascinated with his
shoes.
There was silence for about three minutes making Yohji think that Aya
had already fallen asleep. Looking up he was surprised to see Aya
staring at him.
"Aya?" asked Yohji becoming nervous. Maybe Aya really hated him
after all, "I'm."
"I forgive you," said Aya seriously and closed his eyes again. A few
minutes later Yohji knew Aya was asleep by his slow breathing.
"I'll be damned," muttered Yohji under his breath, leaving Aya's room
to go get something to drink. However, he didn't realize that Aya
had heard him.
