Client Configurations for LES DUMMIES

JBN2 QuickStart

Instructions

0) You may get PGP, MIX and JBN2 at my one-stop Downloads area.
1) Install PGP (PGP 2.63ia and PGP 6.58 work for me, *NOT* PGP 7/8) to a short-name directory (e.g. P:\PGP).
2) Install Mixmaster (Mixmaster 2.04b46, *NOT* Mixmaster 2.9) to a short-name directory (e.g. P:\MIX).
3) Set environment variables PATH, PGPPATH and MIXPATH.
4) Install JBN2 to a short-name directory (e.g. P:\JBN2).
5) Do *NOT* start JBN2 (not even *once*, or uninstall+zap directory+reinstall).
6) Overwrite your corresponding existing files with JBNConf.NEW and JBNData.NEW, also zipped here..
7) Start JBN2.

This will get you directly to the configuration described in 'Client Configuration: JBN2' (actually: a bit further)

Explanation

On 1st startup, JBN2 creates files
.... JBNConf.DAT (from JBNConf.NEW)
.... JBNData.DAT (from JBNData.NEW)
and fills them with
... links to pingers (sources for stats/keyrings), but most of them are dead/obsolete, and the new ones are missing.
... names of remailers, but most of them are dead, and the new ones are missing.
... other adresses (M2news, ...), but some of them are dead, and new ones are missing.
...
The two .NEW files I propose just got those obsolete data replaced with fresher ones.
At 1st startup, those fresher data will be loaded into your own .DAT files.
This will minimize the number of annoying warning messages at startup.
It is still a good idea to read the manual, and understand what you are doing.

Common Blunders

DON'T
.... Try to use exotic versions of PGP, PGP7 or PGP8.
.... Try to use mixmaster 2.9 instead of mixmaster 2.04.
.... Install programs to long-name directories (e.g. C:\Program Files\... C:\MixMaster\...)
.... Forget to set properly environment variables.

These 4 amount to 95% of installation problems and will get you little sympathy from elders.
