friday 6th to sunday 8th july 07 - antiworld festival
Imagine if you will, a music festival penned by JK Rowling; the confabulated tales of fantasy, the otherwordly characters and the occult setting. Add to that a little sprinkle of angel dust and you are now perfectly in mind of the inaugural Antiworld Festival.
A shallow bowl in the mist of a dense forest near Aldershot hosts four circus tents and an outdoor stage, flanked by caravans selling anything from silicon coned UV underwear to mystically scented Jos sticks, via the kind of burgers that only appear in Jamie Oliver's most desperate nightmares.
Strange rave-munchkins dance around James Alexander's techy house, looking like special edition nu-rave Barbies with pink and blue braids matted entirely throughout their hair. Dreadlocked imps perform mysterious pagan magic; balancing acts with crystal balls, juggling with fire sticks. Olympic standard hoola-hooping and acutely synchronised poi swirling is commonplace amongst the bulbous beats of Radioactive Man which contaminate everyone within earshot, instantly infecting them with a need to boogie.
As the sun retreats to the west, darkness sneaks upon us, riding on the crest of Lush's proggy psy waves in the Domo Records tent; building, swirling and pulsing like the heartbeat of a speed-ridden Ramone.
Approaching the Raindance old skool arena next door, it smacks of some smoky, post-apocalyptic ritual. Dancers move in tandem to the relentless snappy-but-happy bass of days gone by, freeze framed monochromatically by the flashing strobes.
Fast forward to the firefly tent and Thomas Schumacher is dropping Pier Bucci's dubby, blipped out 'Hay Consuelo' to a chorus of whistles before the percussion-polluted techno melodies of Guido Schneider's 'Rumours' trigger some serious shape shifting…
